Masculinities and Crimes Against the Environment

NIC GROOMBRIDGE

St Mary's University College, University of Surrey, UK

This article argues from a green perspective that criminology has failed adequately to address either the environment or masculinities. It explores elements of `car culture' such as `joyriding' and `road rage' as well as protests against road-building and the car. Using methods drawn from cultural studies and Sumner's concept of censure, it seeks a more holistic criminology and crime policy.

Key Words: car • censure • environment • green • masculinities
